INVESTMENT STRATEGIES

Multi-Asset Investing

Multi-asset investing considers how different investments work together. Its purpose is to evaluate a portfolio's combined exposures rather than judge each holding in isolation.

See the portfolio as a connected whole.

An allocation may combine public and private assets, external managers and different investment styles. The relevant questions include how holdings behave under stress, whether liquidity matches expected cash needs and how much exposure rests on the same economic assumptions. A wider set of holdings does not automatically produce meaningful diversification.

  1. Asset allocation

The distribution of capital across asset classes, with consideration of objectives, investment horizon and liquidity needs.

  2. Manager selection

Assessment of a manager's process, personnel, operational arrangements, fees and role within the broader portfolio.

  3. Alternative strategies

Specialist approaches that may draw on public or private markets and require analysis of their particular return drivers.

Portfolios of funds, direct holdings and separately managed allocations. Any proposed combination requires clear investment guidelines, reporting and an understanding of underlying fees.

  1. Economic exposures

Look through individual holdings to identify shared sensitivities to growth, rates, credit conditions and market sentiment.

  2. Liquidity planning

Compare available cash and realizable assets with commitments, spending requirements and potential capital calls.

  3. Implementation

Review position sizing, manager overlap, costs and the discipline used to reassess allocations over time.

Assets that appear diversified may decline together. Manager selection, complex instruments and layers of fees can impair results. Liquid assets may need to be sold to support less liquid commitments. Diversification does not prevent losses or assure a favorable outcome.

What risks does the combined portfolio carry that individual holdings do not reveal?

These considerations are illustrative and not exhaustive. Evaluate any actual investment using its own documents, terms and risk disclosures.
